Smile Makeover
Veneers vs. Crowns: Understanding the Real Difference
What a veneer actually is
A porcelain veneer is a thin shell — roughly 0.5mm — bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers are primarily cosmetic: they address shape, color, and minor alignment issues while preserving most of the underlying natural tooth.
What a crown actually is
A crown fully encases the tooth above the gumline. Crowns are typically used when a tooth has significant structural damage, has undergone root canal treatment, or needs more strength than a veneer's thin shell can provide.
Which is right for your smile makeover?
If your teeth are structurally healthy and your goal is purely aesthetic, veneers are almost always the better, more conservative choice. If a tooth is cracked, heavily filled, or root-canal-treated, a crown provides the strength veneers can't. Most smile makeovers use veneers on healthy front teeth and reserve crowns for teeth that need structural reinforcement.
